The International University Sports Federation (FISU), the Federation of University Sports of China (FUSC), and the Organizing Committee of Chengdu 2021, FISU World University Games jointly announced that Chengdu 2021, FISU World University Games, originally scheduled to be held in Chengdu, Sichuan Province of China in August 2021, will be postponed to 2022 due to global COVID-19 situation and international travel restrictions at present with rescheduled dates to be agreed by relative bodies. The name, Chengdu 2021 FISU World University Games and its logo will be retained.
The Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines (FESSAP) who will be sending athletes and planning to hold the 2nd Philippine University Swimming League (PUSL) is saddened by the postponement of the World University Games.
FISU said many of the athletes elite expected to compete during Chengdu 2021 have been able to train, albeit with some interruptions, throughout the pandemic. Many, however, have not as university campuses and sports facilities have faced lengthy closures. Furthermore, the FISU Executive Committee felt the likely improvements in the public health situation over the next year would be such that an event in 2022 would be considerably more likely to offer the formative experience that FISU aims to deliver. This approach is fully aligned with FISU’s goal of positively shaping the leaders of the future through their experience of international university sport.
The decision from FISU, FUSC, and the Organizing Committee is aiming to protect the safety and health of all people involved including athletes and the citizens. FISU, FUSC, and the Organizing Committee will continue to promote the preparation and ensure successful FISU Games.
No specific makeup dates were announced, and FISU says that they will be agreed to by the relevant bodies. The 2023 summer host is scheduled to be in Ekaterinburg, Russia, with the hosting duties for the 2025 and 2027 summer editions expected in 2022.
A new invitation will be sent to all collegiate members of FESSAP to take part in the 2nd PUSL games which will serve as a qualifying meet for swimmers to represent the Philippines in the 31st Summer Universiade Game 2022.
The FESSAP is the sole national university sports organization officially recognized by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). It is also affiliated with other prestigious international organizations such as Asian University Sports Federation (AUSF), Asia Pacific University Sports Union (APUSU), and ASEAN University Sports Council (AUSC) as the country’s representative.
